Alton Pitre is a 22 year-old native of The Jungles community based in Los Angeles. Formerly incarcerated at the age of 18 for a crime he did not commit, Pitre used his circumstance as a bridge to refine himself while fighting for justice.
He was released in 2010 and since has transitioned his once negative into a positive. Pitre currently attends LA Valley College studying journalism and works for LA County Department of Parks and Recreation. Pitre also is an ambassador for juvenile justice and belongs to two amazing non-profit organizations; InsideOutWriters (IOW) and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC), both based in the Los Angeles area.
IOW conducts weekly creative writing classes within the LA County juvenile systems In hopes of reducing the recidivism rates. ARC is composed of formerly incarcerated persons now pursuing productive lives in their communities while also advocating for policy change in the criminal justice systems.
Pitre was a victim of his environment but is a living testimony of change.
